HOW  WE  STARTED

“A LIFE OF THE SEA:

THE JIM MANZOLILLO STORY.”

The principal character, Jim Manzolillo, was a retired ship builder. Dr. David Mailman - the producer, director, cinematographer and editor - is a retired professor of physiology. The narrator, Kathy Osman, is a retired attorney.

After David retired from forty-two years as a professor of physiology, his fascination with movies made filmmaking an obvious second career. “I couldn’t just sit around and do nothing. I had to have a focus and a goal. I started by making a half-dozen twenty-minute short films that were shown on channel 17. ”

The idea for the documentary film was born when David and Kathy first visited the Houston Maritime Museum on a “small museum- day outing.”

Kathy recalls: “ The sign on the door said ‘ring bell’ and when we did, Jim came to the door and showed us around his wonderful museum. His personality and his connection to the exhibits made the visit memorable. We realized what a find this was when we started to talk to Jim and heard the fascinating story of his life.”

“When it came time to pick a new project, a documentary film seemed like the obvious choice.  Jim and his museum were a ‘light- bulb’ selection”, says David.

“The more I got into the film, the more I realized that Jim represented a whole generation of persons that went ahead and did what was needed. They built and sailed the ships, they fought the war, they built after the war was over.”
